From library to research institute

The Mesrop Mashtots Matenadaran in Yerevan combines a manuscript repository, museum and research institute. An important foundation of its collection is the library of the catholicosate at Etchmiadzin. The manuscripts moved to Yerevan in 1939; the institution received research-institute status in 1959. Its history shows how generations of collecting became an organized program of preservation, study and public education.

What can a book tell us?

The manuscripts contain more than religious works. They preserve knowledge of history, medicine, language, philosophy and other subjects. One volume can contain a principal text, marginal notes and records added by later owners. A page therefore provides evidence about readers and materials as well as its author's subject. Wear and repairs can also raise questions about the book's use and travels.

How researchers work

A researcher records the manuscript's shelfmark, material, dimensions, script, date and contents. When several copies preserve the same work, their readings can be compared. A scribe might omit a word, correct an error or transmit an addition. Comparison helps reveal changes in the text. The date when a surviving copy was made is not necessarily the date when its underlying work was first composed.

Conservation and digitization

Specialists examine paper or parchment, ink, pigments and bindings. Preventive care limits future damage; treatment requires an informed assessment of the object. Digital photographs let readers enlarge details and consult pages remotely, reducing repeated handling of originals. Yet a screen cannot convey every material property. Digitization increases access while conservation protects the physical object: both are needed, and neither makes the other unnecessary.

Make your first manuscript record

Choose a genuine photograph from the gallery. Write what you can see, what you can confidently identify and what remains unknown. Separate observation from interpretation: a darkened edge is visible evidence, but the cause of that change needs investigation. Add the image's identifying caption to your classroom presentation. The generated cover depicts an imagined conservation scene, not actual Matenadaran staff or a documented interior.
