Eagle carpet — Artsvagorg

Heritage Object
Type

The artsvagorg, also known as the Jraberd carpet, is recognised by its powerful radiating composition. The eagle appears through stylised ornament rather than naturalistic depiction.

Historical context

Historical context

The name Jraberd connects the design with an Artsakh weaving centre. A late nineteenth-century example is recorded in the History Museum of Armenia under number 9023.

Pattern and composition

Pattern and composition

A large cruciform medallion anchors the centre. Hooked arches above and below end in eagle-head forms; diagonal bands link the composition, and smaller crosses occupy the half-medallions.

How to look

How to look

Look at the relationship between the central cross and the surrounding hooks. Their outward rhythm gives the design a sense of breadth and energy.
