Stories behind our heritage

Behind every monument of Armenian heritage is a human story. Stone walls once echoed with voices, manuscripts preserved ideas, and buildings that stand silent today were once centres of learning, creativity and community life. To understand that world, we sometimes need to imagine how people lived, what they created, what they struggled for and what they hoped to pass on to future generations.

Armenian Treasures seeks to preserve this heritage and make it accessible through contemporary technology. Within this vision, we are planning a collaboration with eleve11 to present Armenian history and culture through short films. The idea is to bring historical material, creative interpretation and digital tools together in engaging, accessible and meaningful stories about the past.

The proposed programme centres on a series of 100 historical short films, each approximately five to six minutes long. Each film would explore a story, a significant episode, a cultural treasure or a historical setting. This format offers a way into broad subjects through individual narratives, giving viewers time to discover, connect and pursue their curiosity.

Creative collaboration and responsibility

Using artificial intelligence and three-dimensional visualisation, we want to depict environments that are often known today through written accounts, surviving fragments or specialist research. What might everyday life in a historical city have looked like? How did a manuscript scribe work? What life unfolded around a monastery? Such questions can become starting points for films that help viewers form a personal connection with history.

eleve11’s proposed role concerns the creative and production work behind the films. We want to bring the cultural mission of Armenian Treasures and eleve11’s creative contribution together around a shared purpose: a series in which the visual language serves the story and technology helps reveal its substance. A valuable film is one that leaves a viewer wanting to read more, visit a monument or ask another question.

Historical storytelling requires care. Digitally created images can be highly convincing, which makes it essential to distinguish documented information, research-based reconstruction and artistic interpretation. Studying historical sources and seeking specialist review are important principles for the proposed work. Creative freedom should go hand in hand with attention to evidence, and uncertainty should be presented honestly rather than turned into apparent fact.

Learning and connecting across borders

Education is a central ambition of the series. For children and young people, history often becomes more accessible when connected to a person, a place and a decision. A short film can be their first encounter with a monument, a historical figure or a cultural tradition. It may spark a simple question—“What happened next?”—and encourage independent learning.

We also envisage these films as resources that complement learning: starting points for classroom discussion, family viewing or preparation for a cultural visit. Their value would be especially clear if viewers went on to compare a screen reconstruction with a real monument, find its location on a map or discover what has survived to the present day.

The initiative could also be meaningful for Armenians living outside Armenia. Families pass on their relationship with Armenian culture through language, memories, music and shared stories. Contemporary visual storytelling can offer another way to sustain that connection. A child growing up far away may come to recognise a heritage site and discover a human story behind a historical name.

We also want to make Armenian heritage approachable for people who are not yet familiar with Armenia. Its history contains experiences that can resonate across cultures: the desire to create, the preservation of knowledge, the strength of community, rebuilding after loss and attachment to one’s surroundings. Thoughtful storytelling can introduce Armenia through people, their choices and the values they created.

From the screen to discovering heritage

We plan to connect the series with the wider Armenian Treasures digital platform. A film could lead viewers to an article about a monument, its location on the heritage map or an available virtual tour. Curiosity sparked by one story could become a continuing journey—from the screen to knowledge and, where possible, to the place itself.

The planned collaboration with eleve11 is part of our search for new ways to tell the stories of Armenian heritage. We want to create material that people will choose to watch, discuss and share, making the past more familiar and its preservation more personal.

Heritage continues when someone becomes curious, learns and passes a story on. We want these films to be the beginning of that encounter.
