Yuri Oganessian
Expanding the boundaries of the periodic table
Yuri Oganessian is a nuclear physicist of Armenian descent, born in 1933. His career is associated with the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna and the study of superheavy chemical elements.
Experiments conducted under his leadership with international collaborators contributed to the production of new elements and the investigation of their properties. They also deepened understanding of the relative stability of superheavy nuclei.
In 2016, element 118 was officially named oganesson in his honour. The name recognizes decades of research grounded in experimental ingenuity and international cooperation. His career illustrates the sustained, collaborative nature of scientific discovery.
