Revealing the birth of stars and a changing universe

Viktor Ambartsumian was an Armenian astrophysicist and a major figure in the development of theoretical astrophysics. Born in Tiflis in 1908, he studied in Leningrad. He founded the Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory in 1946, helping establish Armenia as a centre of international astronomical research.

His work on stellar associations in 1947 provided important evidence that stars continue to form in our Galaxy. He also made fundamental contributions to radiative transfer through the invariance principle and emphasized the importance of activity in galactic nuclei.

Ambartsumian led the Armenian Academy of Sciences from 1947 to 1993 and the International Astronomical Union from 1961 to 1964. Training researchers and building international cooperation were central to his career. He died in Byurakan in 1996, leaving a legacy that joined observational evidence with bold theoretical questions.
