Tateos Agekian
The motion of stellar systems and their statistical patterns
Tateos Agekian was an astronomer of Armenian origin, born in Batumi in 1913. He graduated from Leningrad University’s mathematics and mechanics faculty in 1938. After wartime service, he returned to the university and taught stellar dynamics, kinematics and statistics for many years.
His research concerned the motion of stellar systems, gravitational fields and galactic structure. He used mathematical and statistical methods to draw general conclusions about large numbers of interacting bodies from astronomical observations.
Agekian wrote textbooks on probability, statistics and the analysis of observational errors for astronomers and physicists. He also valued public understanding of science and the education of young researchers. He died in 2006, leaving a legacy that connected the observation of the universe with rigorous mathematical thinking.
