Stephen Stepanian
An inventor linking concrete mixing and transport
Stephen Stepanian was an Armenian American inventor who worked on improvements to construction equipment and tools. His name is particularly associated with the early development of concrete mixer vehicles.
On 21 November 1933, he received United States patent 1935922 for a concrete mixing and transporting vehicle. The design combined a truck chassis, a rotating mixer and a conveyor for discharging concrete. It addressed a practical challenge: preparing, moving and delivering building material to the pouring point through an integrated system.
Stepanian’s work is an important example of the development of mobile construction machinery. His solutions belong within the contributions of many engineers working in this field. His legacy centres on an inventive way of thinking: identifying difficulties in everyday work and answering them with a useful mechanical design.
