From a mathematical theorem to Armenian computing

Sergey Mergelyan was an Armenian mathematician, born in Simferopol in 1928. A graduate of Yerevan State University, he gained recognition at a remarkably young age for work in complex analysis and approximation theory.

The theorem bearing his name establishes conditions under which functions of a complex variable can be uniformly approximated by polynomials. It holds an important place in the theory of functions.

From 1956 to 1960, he directed the Yerevan Research Institute of Mathematical Machines, which he helped establish. He also trained mathematicians and supported computing in Armenia. Mergelyan died in 2008, leaving a legacy of fundamental research and scientific institution building.
