Sergei Adian
From mathematical logic to a major problem in group theory
Sergei Adian was a mathematician of Armenian descent, born in 1931. His career was associated with mathematical logic, algebra and Moscow’s Steklov Mathematical Institute.
A result obtained with Pyotr Novikov in 1968 addressed the celebrated Burnside problem. They showed that, for sufficiently large odd exponents, finitely generated infinite groups can exist even though raising every element to the given exponent yields the identity.
Adian’s work deepened understanding of group structure and algorithmic decidability. He also trained generations of researchers. He died in 2020, leaving a rich legacy of demanding proof methods and new directions for mathematical investigation.
