Paris Herouni
Exploring the universe through radio waves
Paris Herouni was an Armenian radiophysicist and engineer, born in Yerevan in 1933. His research encompassed antenna systems, radio measurements and astronomical instrumentation.
Under his leadership, the ROT-54/2.6 radio-optical telescope was built at Orgov, combining a radio antenna 54 metres in diameter with a 2.6-metre optical telescope. The complex was designed to bring observations in different wavelength ranges together with precision measurement.
Herouni led a radiophysics research institute and trained specialists. He died in 2008. The development of Armenia’s engineering capabilities and the distinctive Orgov research complex form important parts of his scientific legacy.
