Mkhitar Heratsi

A medieval physician who joined medical learning with attentive care

Mkhitar Heratsi was a prominent twelfth-century Armenian physician and medical author. His work belongs to the intellectual setting of Cilicia and Hromkla. He brought together the medical knowledge of his period, the writings of earlier authors and observations drawn from practice.

His principal work, Relief of Fevers, was written in 1184. It examines illnesses accompanied by fever, their course and the patient’s condition. Heratsi valued clear language so that the book could support physicians and the care of patients. His concept of “mould” belongs to medieval medical thought and should not be equated with modern microbiology.

His legacy includes attention to the individual patient, diet, surroundings and emotional wellbeing. His treatise is a major landmark in the history of Armenian medical writing. Yerevan State Medical University bears his name, preserving the memory of a tradition that linked medical learning with humane care.
