Mkhitar Djrbashian
Function theory and the growth of Armenia’s mathematical school
Mkhitar Djrbashian was an Armenian mathematician born in Yerevan in 1918. He graduated from Yerevan State University in 1941, later teaching there for many years and leading its chair of function theory.
His research covered complex analysis, approximation theory, harmonic analysis and integral representations of functions. These fields examine how functions behave and how they can be represented and studied.
He directed the Armenian Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Mathematics from 1971 to 1989. Alongside research, he trained scholars and helped develop Armenia’s mathematical school. He died in 1994, leaving monographs, textbooks and a scientific tradition continued by his students.
