Ivan Knunyants
Exploring organofluorine chemistry and new materials
Ivan Knunyants was a Soviet Armenian chemist born in Shushi in 1906. He graduated from Moscow’s Bauman technical institute in 1928, where the organic chemist Alexei Chichibabin played an important role in his scientific training.
His principal field was the chemistry of organic compounds containing fluorine. He investigated their preparation, structures and properties, connecting fundamental chemistry with the development of new materials. His interests also included monomers, synthetic fibres and biologically active compounds.
In 1954, Knunyants established an organofluorine laboratory, which he led until 1986. Alongside research, he taught and trained a new generation of specialists. He died in 1990, leaving a scientific school that helped explain how molecular structure determines a material’s useful properties.
