Hovhannes Adamian

An engineer who advanced the transmission of colour images

Hovhannes Adamian was an Armenian engineer and inventor who contributed to early research on transmitting colour images. Born in Baku in 1879, he studied in Europe and conducted electrical experiments that led him to the problem of sending pictures over a distance.

In the early twentieth century, Adamian developed systems for transmitting colour components and patented his solutions. Separating an image into colour components and recombining them at the receiving end was central to his research. In 1925, at Yerevan University, he demonstrated Herates, his experimental apparatus for producing a three-colour image.

His work formed an early chapter in the long development of colour television. It was not yet a mass broadcasting service, but it demonstrated technical possibilities for colour transmission. Adamian died in 1932; his legacy shows how laboratory experiments can prepare the way for later communication technologies.
