Gregory Garibian
Transition radiation as a way to identify particles
Gregory Garibian was an Armenian theoretical physicist, born in 1924. His career was associated with the Yerevan Physics Institute and Armenia’s Academy of Sciences. He studied the motion and radiation of charged particles in different media.
A major contribution was his development of the theory of X-ray transition radiation. This radiation arises when a charged particle crosses a boundary between media with different electromagnetic properties. Theoretical and experimental work in Yerevan clarified its characteristics.
This knowledge found applications in detectors that register and distinguish high-energy particles. Garibian also helped organize scientific life in Armenia. He died in 1991, leaving a legacy connecting particle physics with measurement technology.
