Giacomo Luigi Ciamician
A visionary investigator of chemical change and solar energy
Giacomo Luigi Ciamician was an Italian chemist of Armenian origin. Born in Trieste, he studied in European scientific centres and worked in Rome. From 1889, the University of Bologna became the main setting of his career.
With Paul Silber, Ciamician investigated chemical transformations caused by light. Their work contributed significantly to the development of organic photochemistry. His interests also included natural compounds and the chemistry of plant substances.
In 1912 he outlined a future in which solar energy could serve industry as an alternative to coal. This was a forward-looking scientific vision, rather than the invention of modern solar technology. His legacy connects fundamental chemistry with long-term thinking about energy and the natural world.
