Ervand Kogbetliantz
From mathematical theory to numerical computation
Ervand Kogbetliantz was an Armenian mathematician whose career linked Armenia, France and the United States. Born in Rostov-on-Don in 1888, he helped organise Armenia’s first mathematical association in 1920 and became its first president.
His research included infinite series, orthogonal polynomials and numerical analysis. The Kogbetliantz algorithm associated with the singular value decomposition of matrices is a notable part of his legacy. This field turns complex numerical problems into systematic, computable steps.
He also taught mathematics and explored practical computational methods. His interests extended to experimental forms of three-dimensional chess. He died in Paris in 1974. His career brings together theoretical mathematics, the practical demands of calculation and scientific connections that continued across countries and institutions.
