Dmitry Mirimanoff
Investigating the foundations of sets and the patterns of numbers
Dmitry Mirimanoff was a Swiss mathematician of Armenian origin. Born in Russia, he continued his education in France and spent much of his scientific career in Switzerland. He taught for many years at the University of Geneva.
His research encompassed number theory and the foundations of set theory. He worked on questions related to Fermat’s Last Theorem and investigated the structure of sets. His 1917 work contributed important ideas concerning well-founded sets and the ranking of sets.
Mirimanoff’s legacy shows how sustained attention to abstract questions can reshape the language of mathematics. His name survives in mathematical concepts and results, while his teaching connected research with the education of new generations of mathematicians.
