Ardem Patapoutian
Uncovering the molecular mechanisms of touch
Ardem Patapoutian is an Armenian American molecular biologist and neuroscientist, born in Beirut in 1967. He developed his scientific training and research career in the United States, investigating the cellular foundations of sensory perception.
At Scripps Research, his team identified PIEZO1 and PIEZO2, ion channels that respond to mechanical forces. This work helped explain how cells convert pressure and touch into electrical signals and how the body senses its position and movement.
In 2021, Patapoutian shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with David Julius for discoveries of receptors for temperature and touch. His work connects fundamental sensory biology with everyday human experience.
