From electromechanics to weather observation from space

Andronik Iosifyan was an Armenian engineer, scientist and inventor who lived from 1905 to 1993. Born in the village of Tsmakahogh, he built a career around electric machines, precision control devices and the organisation of complex engineering systems.

In 1941, he became head of the enterprise from which the All-Union Research Institute of Electromechanics, VNIIEM, developed. Under his leadership, the institute produced electromechanical equipment for many purposes and contributed to computing and space technology.

A major direction of his work was the development of Meteor weather satellites. These supported large-scale observation of clouds and atmospheric conditions from space. Iosifyan’s legacy shows how motors, control instruments and engineering teams can be brought together into an integrated system for studying the Earth.
