Amirdovlat Amasiatsi
A scholar of medicine, medicinal substances and Armenian scientific language
Amirdovlat Amasiatsi was a fifteenth-century Armenian physician, naturalist and author. Born in Amasya, he also worked in Constantinople and encountered several medical traditions. His Armenian writings combine practical experience with an organized body of knowledge about nature and medicinal substances.
Learning of Medicine and Benefit of Medicine discuss the human body, symptoms and the care of patients. Akhrapatin concerns pharmaceutical knowledge, while Useless for the Ignorant is an extensive compendium of medicinal substances and their names. These books preserve medieval understandings of materials derived from plants, animals and minerals.
Amasiatsi also sought to present knowledge in clear, accessible Armenian. His works are valuable records for the history of medicine, natural science and Armenian scientific vocabulary. They reveal the medical culture of their period and show how practical experience could become written knowledge passed between generations.
