Alexander Kemurdzhian
An engineering path to the surface of the Moon
Alexander Kemurdzhian was a Soviet Armenian engineer born in 1921. He specialized in vehicle mobility and worked in transport engineering research in Leningrad.
He led the team that developed the self-propelled chassis for the Lunokhod programme. Lunokhod 1 operated on the Moon from 1970, followed by Lunokhod 2 in 1973. Controlled from Earth, these vehicles explored the terrain of another celestial body.
His particular contribution lay in engineering mobility for lunar conditions and advancing space robotics. Kemurdzhian died in 2003. His career shows how expertise in terrestrial machinery can open new paths for planetary exploration.
