Tir
God of wisdom, learning and the interpretation of dreams
Tir was the ancient Armenian god of wisdom, learning, and science—the scribe or secretary of the supreme god Aramazd. His place of worship was located near ancient Artashat and was called the “Chancery of Aramazd's Scribe” or the “Temple of Learning.” In modern terms, it was the office of the god Tir, which simultaneously served as a center for education where pagan priests studied science and wisdom. Priestly sciences and wisdom primarily included divination, especially the interpretation of dreams. For this reason, the god Tir was also called the “Guide of Dreams” and “Interpreter of Dreams.” Priests learned the art of dream divination from him, and the ancient Armenians called Tir's place of worship “Erazamoyn Teghik” (places full of or abundant in dreams). Pilgrims coming here received the interpretations of their dreams from the god Tir through the mediation of the priests.
