Spandaramet

The mysterious ruler of the underworld and the depths

Spandaramet, also called Sandaramet, was the god of the underworld among the ancient Armenians. He was often identified with the subterranean world, the realm of the dead, or hell itself.

In antiquity, Spandaramet was identified with the Greek Dionysus or Bacchus, patron of gardens and wine. Later he was regarded as the ruler of the earth, the depths and hell, bearing the title Sandarametapet. The plural expression “Sandarametk andndots” could refer both to the abysses of hell and to its evil spirits.
