Church of Saint Mary, the Holy Mother of God, in Rind

A Centre of Faith and Unity for the Community of Rind

The Church of Saint Mary, the Holy Mother of God, stands in an elevated part of Rind village in Armenia’s Vayots Dzor Province and serves as the principal centre of the community’s modern spiritual life. Constructed from local tuff and basalt, it rises above the village houses and gardens and completes the panorama of Rind. Although modern, its proportions, stonework and architectural restraint continue the traditions of Armenian church building.

The ceremonial foundation-laying took place on 28 April 2014. During the service, sixteen foundation stones were consecrated and placed at the base of the building. Construction continued for seven years and was completed through the joint participation of benefactors, village residents and community organisations. The church is therefore not merely an architectural building but the result of a community united around a shared purpose.

The architectural project was designed by Samvel Aghajanyan. The land required for the church was donated to the community by Rind resident Surik Karapetyan. One of the principal benefactors was Vardan Sargsyan, a businessman originally from the village. Local entrepreneurs and residents also joined the initiative by contributing to fundraising and organisational work. This shared participation revived the traditional practice in which a sanctuary was created through the devotion of the entire community.

The architectural design combines the upward movement characteristic of Armenian churches with the possibilities of modern construction. The central volume is crowned by a dome whose rising silhouette can be seen from different parts of the village. The combination of tuff and basalt gives the façades a natural depth of colour, while the restrained ornament does not overwhelm the principal form.

The exterior is organised through simple and clearly defined proportions. An arched opening emphasises the entrance, while the stone treatment of the walls establishes a visual connection with the medieval monuments of Vayots Dzor. Inside, the organisation of the prayer hall directs movement and attention towards the eastern sanctuary. Light enters through limited openings, producing a calm and prayerful atmosphere.

The church was consecrated and officially opened on 13 September 2021. It then became the active spiritual centre of Rind, hosting liturgies, baptisms, marriages, memorial services and events dedicated to religious feasts. Through the construction of the church, the community received the shared sacred space whose absence had been felt for many years.

The dedication to Saint Mary, the Holy Mother of God, is particularly meaningful for a rural community. In Armenian ecclesiastical tradition, the Virgin Mary is associated with motherhood, family, care and spiritual protection. The church is therefore understood not only as a place of worship but also as a symbol of protection for local families and the settlement as a whole.

The value of the Church of Saint Mary in Rind is not determined solely by its architecture. It is a monument of twenty-first-century communal memory, built through donations, labour and years of expectation. The church demonstrates that the Armenian tradition of church construction does not belong only to the past. It continues wherever a community views the creation of a sanctuary as an expression of unity, identity and responsibility for the future.
