Nane

Aramazd’s daughter, a figure of war and maternal power

The next deity of the ancient Armenian pantheon is Nane — daughter of Aramazd and likely a goddess of war, whose cult was closely intertwined with that of the Great Mother Goddess Anahit. It is no coincidence that Nane's richly appointed temple stood in the village of Til in the province of Ekegheats, in close proximity to the temple of Anahit. To this day, the word “nane” remains in common use among the people to mean “grandmother” — literally “the great mother” — a testament both to the goddess Nane's connection with the divine maternal principle and to the enduring presence of her name and veneration in popular tradition.
