A world preserved in manuscripts
The Mesrop Mashtots Matenadaran brings visitors into the history of Armenian manuscript culture. Its museum presents religious, historical, medical and philosophical works alongside miniature painting and translated literature. Each manuscript is both a source of knowledge and an artwork shaped by a scribe’s and an artist’s hands.
The museum building, designed by Mark Grigoryan, prepares visitors for this encounter through forms inspired by medieval Armenian architecture. Manuscripts in other languages reveal connections between cultures, while maps and materials on manuscript production offer further ways to discover how knowledge was created, illustrated and passed on.
