SAINT HRIPSIME CHURCH OF BARDZRAVAN

The Surviving Spiritual Memory of an Abandoned Settlement

Saint Hripsime Church is located in Armenia’s Syunik Province, approximately three kilometres northeast of the village of Bardzravan, within the historic settlement of Pasharajur, also known as Basharajur. Standing in the elevated landscape above the Vorotan Gorge, the church is one of the best-preserved monuments of the former settlement.

The church dates from the 17th–18th centuries. It was built during a period when Syunik’s small and remote communities continued to maintain their communal and spiritual life despite political instability and economic hardship. Village churches of this kind served not only as places of prayer but also as settings for baptisms, family ceremonies, memorial rites and community gatherings.

Saint Hripsime is a modest stone building whose restrained architecture is adapted to the mountain environment. Its heavy masonry walls, narrow openings and simple interior create a sense of strength and seclusion. The character of the church is shaped not by elaborate sculptural decoration but by the natural proportions of its stone volumes and their close relationship with the surrounding landscape.

Cross-carved stones and traces of inscriptions survive within and around the church. A cemetery dating from the 14th–18th centuries extends around the building, while a khachkar dated to 1454 stands approximately thirty metres southeast of it. These monuments demonstrate that the site was not only the spiritual centre of the settlement but also a place where the memory of successive generations was preserved.

The church is dedicated to Saint Hripsime. Within the tradition of the Armenian Apostolic Church, she represents unwavering devotion to faith and spiritual courage in the face of persecution. Village churches dedicated to her throughout Armenia connected the religious lives of local communities with the broader Christian tradition of the Armenian people.

The settlement of Pasharajur was gradually abandoned and fell into ruin, while many of its buildings disappeared. Saint Hripsime Church, however, remained standing. Together with the cemetery, khachkar and traces of the settlement, it forms a historic environment in which the presence of the former community can still be felt.

The importance of Saint Hripsime Church is not limited to its age. It recalls Syunik’s vanished small settlements, the families who lived within them and the spiritual culture that shaped their lives. Standing alone in the landscape, the church preserves the memory of a community whose residential world has disappeared, while its stone testimony of faith remains.
