Vahagn: Born from Fire and Sea

October 22, 2026

Myth • a free retelling

Heaven and earth are in labour. The sea, too, awaits an extraordinary birth. A reed stands in the water. Smoke rises from it, then flame. Out of that fire comes the young Vahagn, with blazing hair and eyes like suns.

These images come from the birth song transmitted by Movses Khorenatsi. This is a mythic narrative, not a historical description of a human birth. Nature itself seems to gather to bring the hero into the world.

Part of the song’s power lies in its contrasts: fire emerges from water, a mighty figure from a slender reed. Picture the scene without an illustration. Which colour appears first? A few lines of old poetry can still give the imagination an entire world to inhabit.
