How to Look at a Khachkar

October 22, 2026

A closer look

A khachkar’s carved surface can resemble woven stone. Rosettes and interlacing lines often surround a central cross, but the details of each monument deserve their own context.

Begin at the centre: how does the cross divide the surface? Then follow one carved line with your eyes. Finally, look at the light arriving from the side. Shadows reveal the depth of the carving. These three steps slow down your gaze and make the maker’s decisions easier to notice.

Avoid assigning a meaning to every shape from appearance alone. A museum label or a specialist’s explanation can reveal what a first glance misses. The pleasure of looking begins with those questions.
