Legend and epic
Young David stands against an overwhelmingly powerful enemy to defend his homeland. This central thread of the Daredevils of Sassoun takes us into a heroic world where wonder and exaggeration belong to the language of storytelling. It is epic, not a documentary record of events.
UNESCO’s 2012 inscription concerns the tradition of performing the epic. That word matters: performance. A storyteller can accelerate the action, build anticipation with a pause or give a character a distinctive voice.
Try reading a short passage aloud. Where would you pause? Which word deserves emphasis? Hearing the same text in different voices reveals new colours. David’s journey continues in that encounter between a teller and a listener.
