Akhtamar: The Light Across the Water

October 22, 2026

Legend • a free retelling

The story tells of Tamar, a young woman on an island in Lake Van. Her beloved swims across at night to meet her. A light she holds guides him through the dark water.

One night, the light goes out. He loses his way and drowns, calling to Tamar. In familiar versions, his final cry, “Akh, Tamar,” is linked to the island’s name. This is a folk explanation of the name, not an established etymology.

Details change between retellings, but the light remains the story’s most memorable image. We can read it as a sign of trust and the hope of meeting. That simple image helps an old tale keep its emotional force, even when we already know how it ends.
